Eye on Africa Since the inception of the Mechanical Engineering degree program at UCCS, all students have participated in a capstone experience that involves working through the engineering design process with an external client to solve a real-world problem. Since 2009, one of the options available to students in the capstone program has been to work on a problem faced by people in other parts of the world, integrating service learning and overtly highlighting the importance of considering the human element when addressing a problem. For the past five years, the focus of these projects has been in Uganda, working with two NGOs that operate there: Imagine Her and the Global Livingston Institute.

Dr. Peter Gorder, current Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, talks about the program in this presentation.
