Virtual world premiere of a new short film—Our Land, Our Life!
November 30, 2023 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Join the Rights and Resources Initiative for a global premiere of a new short film sharing the inspiring story of the Indigenous community of the Maji Moto group ranch in Narok, Kenya.
The film is produced by RRI and Kenya-based Indigenous Livelihoods Enhancement Partners (ILEPA), in partnership with the Video Consortium’s Solutions Storytelling Project and the Skoll Foundation. The premiere will be followed by a live Q&A with the filmmakers and Indigenous leaders from the community.
In Kenya, thousands of Indigenous pastoralist communities have long relied on communal grazing land for their survival. However, legal ownership and control of their ancestral lands remains a struggle for many.
The Maasai pastoral community of the Maji Moto group ranch is one such example. In 2010, the government subdivided most of its land into individual plots, leading local elites to plunder the community’s resources and leaving many members landless.
In 2022, after years of research, lobbying, and legal advocacy by ILEPA with RRI’s support, a Kenyan court ordered the restitution of local residents’ stolen land. But a year later, full implementation of the court’s ruling is still pending.
In April 2023, in collaboration with ILEPA and TonyWild, RRI visited the group ranch to hear first-hand the community’s accounts and learn about its struggle for land rights. While the people of Maji Moto continue their fight, we hope their legal victory and story will inspire other Indigenous communities on their own paths to justice.
